Inspiration from Historical Textiles

During this three-day summer school, Hannah introduces a selection of the techniques she uses to unravel the hidden stories in old textiles. Whether you have precious heirloom treasures, a special item from the back of your wardrobe or would prefer to look at some of Hannah’s own treasures, this is a chance to spend some time really looking and finding a deeper connection to textiles of the past.

Day one involves an introduction to cyanotype techniques and how to use this process to safely print from historic artefacts onto textiles. We will also explore toning cyanotype to create sepia prints. On day two the focus in on slow looking; observing and drawing from historical textiles and translating this into hand stitch. On the final day we will focus on storytelling; translating narrative through stitched text. By the end of the course participants will have either a series of samples or an art piece well on the way to completion.

Lunches and refreshments included.
Days run from 10am to 4pm (ish)

About Hannah

Fascinated by textiles and the stories they can tell, Hannah Lamb’s practice is a personal dialogue with materials. From her studio in Bingley, West Yorkshire she experiments with layers of imagery and surface. Print, stitch and deconstruction techniques are carefully combined to create both sculptural installation works and smaller, more intimate pieces. She is particularly known for her use of cyanotype printing to create shadow-like prints on textiles.

An interest in archives, collections and the heritage of textile manufacturing in the North of England has led to a number of collaborations and commissions, including ‘Lasting Impressions’ (2016 & 2017) with Claire Wellesley-Smith at Salts Mill, ‘Fragment of a Dress’ (2022), commissioned by the Brontë Parsonage Museum and ‘A Cloth for The Lost Mills’ (2024) for 509 Arts with Hannah Robson. She has a love of historical buildings and interesting industrial spaces and enjoys situating her work in non-gallery settings. Hannah exhibits widely and is an exhibiting member of the 62 Group of Textile Artists.

Hanna is the author of Poetic Cloth; Creating Meaning in Textile Art (2019) and Unfolding Cloth:Inspiration from historical Textiles (2025), both published by Batsford.

Hannah studied at Manchester Metropolitan University, gaining a BA (Hons.) Embroidery (2001) followed by MA Textiles (2010). She has lectured in textiles at Bradford School of Art (Bradford College) for over 20 years, where she is currently Programme Leader for the Foundation Degree and BA Textiles Practice. She also has extensive experience teaching adult workshops and summer schools in a variety of venues worldwide and online. Previous hosts include DeMontfort University, Gawthorpe Textiles Collection, Harewood House, Salts Mill, Hope & Elvis, Unit Twelve, The 62 Group of Textile Artists and FibreArts Australia.
