Layered Landscapes - Expressive Drawing and Mixed Media Collage
Using dry media such as pastel, charcoal and pencil we will look at expressive, intuitive mark-making and drawing to capture the energy of the Yorkshire landscape. Throughout the course I will be sharing effective techniques which I employ in my own mixed media work. Starting with drawing exercises outdoors to create fast, gestural sketches inspired by different aspects of the landscape, an exploration of mark making will also be central to these studies to encourage a new way of seeing. Anything which makes an interesting mark can be a drawing and painting tool! Household objects such as wallpaper scrapers and sponges can be brought from home or items can be foraged from the landscape - feathers, sticks, etc.
Bringing everything together, we will transition from expressive drawing and start to play with acrylic and collage, looking at textures, cut and torn edges and interpreting the landscape as a series of interlocking pieces. Participants can incorporate materials such as old drawings, breathing new life into something which would otherwise be dismissed. Beginning with small 5" x 7" collage studies to build confidence, group members then have the option to move on to larger collages.
The course encourages exploration in a relaxed, playful framework with as much guidance as each individual needs. Participants can work at their own speed and according to their own interests, and over the three days will develop a portfolio of a sketchbook, potentially larger works on paper and collages.
Lunches and refreshments included.
Days run from 10am to 4pm (ish)
