Abstraction Through The Senses
This 3 day course will allow you to explore the possibility of making large scale expressive painting through finding a sensory response to your surroundings and experiences. We will consider sound, movement and colour as starting points from which to explore mark, surface and palette.
Working from both the studio and the beautiful tranquil surroundings of the Lund Studios, we will embrace the opportunity to explore abstraction through building a rich vocabulary of mark making and rigorous building of surface in order to set the stage for a series of abstract mixed media works.
Abstraction can often feel like something that is ‘out of grasp’ and this course aims to offer you ‘in roads’ to allow you develop your own voice in this realm, to take forward into your own practice.
We will explore a variety of materials from ink and pastel, to paint and collage, all of which allowing you to ‘free’ your practice and make a body of exciting and dynamic works.
Lunches and refreshments included. Days run from 10am to 4pm (ish)
About Jemma
My work explores a fascination with colour - an obsession perhaps, found in the abundant life of the garden.
While drawings from observation inform the starting point of the work, each piece becomes more about the memory of the perceived, but also the experience felt.
Like memories, some things fade, while others become more relevant, more persistent than initially thought. It is those memories that linger, and return again and again, that are captured in the work. The garden as a place of solace, repair, sanctuary and joy unpins the work.
I live and work in East Lothian, Scotland. My studio is tucked away at the bottom of garden, and allows me a little sanctuary in which to work, aided by my trusty Lurcher, who sits in 'her chair' watching me work.
When I am not in my own studio, I run Paintbox School of Art - an Art School created by myself and my business partner 13 years ago. I truly love the daily engagement with other Artists, and it is such a rewarding job alongside my personal painting practice.
