Land, Weather and Atmosphere : Capturing the landscape in water based mixed media.

Exploring the surroundings of the studio we will make paintings and drawings responding to the land, weather and atmosphere of place. We will work both outside and in the studio. If the weather is very bad, we will make short excursions with sketchbooks otherwise be prepared to work outside. Guidance will be given on using sketchbooks and gathering information in the landscape from which to develop finished paintings in the studio.

Katharine will give frequent demonstrations both outdoors and in the studio. Using water-based materials students will be encouraged to experiment with collage, blending, tangling and spattering amongst other techniques. The emphasis will be on experimentation as students extend their technical abilities and develop their own unique response to the landscape.

Lunches and refreshments included. Days run from 10am to 4pm (ish)

About Katharine

Katharine Holmes is best known for her paintings and drawings of her native Yorkshire landscape. A graduate of the University of Newcastle upon Tyne she returned in 1990 to live and work in the Yorkshire Dales.

She draws and paints outside in all weathers and works from her studio at the Malham cottage where her mother and grandmother lived and painted before her.

Beyond home and the familiar Katharine Holmes paints the wilder fringes of Britain and Ireland especially the Highlands and Islands of Scotland.

Widely exhibited and collected her work is in many private and corporate collections including that of Leeds University where she was given her first major solo exhibition in 1999 and the Mercer Gallery, Harrogate.
