Portraits in Oils Workshop

Explore the medium of masters old and new in this exciting workshop dedicated to portrait painting in oils. You will learn how to capture a likeness using a range of painting techniques which can be refined into a finished portrait. You will explore the structure and form of the human face and practice mixing a range of skin tones to add character and depth to your paintings.

The aim is to make portrait painting less daunting by following a step-by-step approach guided by demonstrations. This workshop is aimed at those with previous experience of painting in oils and/or those who would consider themselves to have a good level of painting experience. The workshop will include working from photographic reference images which will be provided.

Lunch and refreshments included. Day runs from 10am - 4pm (ish)

About Richard

Richard Kitson is a figurative artist based in Barnsley, South Yorkshire. Kitson has exhibited in the UK and internationally and was a participant in Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year in 2018.

Kitson’s work has been featured in selected group exhibitions including the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, Ruth Borchard Self-Portrait Prize, Figurative Art Now and the Cork Street Open. His work hangs in various public and private collections.

Kitson began teaching in 2011, completing his PGCE in 2014 whilst teaching A level fine art at Barnsley Sixth Form College and later Worksop College; a co-educational independent school. Kitson left formal education to take up his artistic practice on a full time basis in 2021 and now delivers workshops and demonstrations across the UK as well as private tuition at his studio. Kitson recently completed a master degree in Fine Art at Leeds Arts University
